2 killed in Karbi Anglong after locals’ suspects a widow in practising witchcraft

 Karbianlong
Haflong: Two persons were killed by a mob in a remote village in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. Locals suspected a 50 years old widow of practicing witchcraft and set their body on fire, police sources said.

The incident happened on Sept 30 night but was reported to the police on Oct 1 morning and recovered remains of the persons. Police have so far arrested nine villagers (including 3 women) in this connection

The incident took place at Rohimapur village (90 km away from dist HQ Diphu) under the Dokmoka police station of Karbi Anglong district. Locals suspected that a 50-year-old widow was practicing witchcraft after a village girl had died under mysterious circumstances.

A kangaroo court sentenced her death and soon a mob started to beat her and attacked her with sharp weapons. When a 28-year-old teacher of the village Bijoy Gaur (unrelated) intervened and accused them of being superstitious, he too was attacked and killed, police sources added.

The village is inhabited by people from the Adivasi community who are daily wage worker and farmers.

The 9 accused have been arrested from the same village and the same community. They will be produced in the court on Friday, police sources added.
