GUWAHATI: The Union government has extended the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in three districts of Arunachal Pradesh. As per the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notification, Tirap, Changlang and Longding districts of Arunachal Pradesh were declared “disturbed” areas under the AFSPA.
Centre has also extended AFSPA in at least four police stations located near Assam borders by another six months, and declared them as ‘disturbed areas’ in view of continuing activities of banned insurgent groups.
Moreover, four police station areas which were AFSPA was extended were Namsai and Mahadevpur police stations in Namsai district, Roing police station in Lower Dibang Valley district and Sunpura police station in Lohit district.
Home ministry officials said that the decision was taken following a review of the law and order situation in the three districts and the four police station areas concerned.
Officials said that several banned insurgent groups of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) and United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) have been active in these areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
