GUWAHATI: One person returning from UK was tested positive in Assam, said state’s health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The mutated coronavirus strain that’s been spreading in the UK Returnee Tested Positive appeared to be more contagious and likely lead to higher levels of hospitalizations and deaths next year, a new study revealed. The variant is 56% more transmissible than other strains, according to the study by the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Sarma said that the swab sample of the infected person has already been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune for verification.
He said, “We are yet to know whether it’s the new variant of coronavirus or the regular one. The sample has been sent and we are waiting for the report.” He added that the report was likely to be out within three days.
The minister has also denied on government’s plan of any possible lockdown.
In the last 24 hours, Assam recorded some 95 new Covid19 cases, taking the total to 2, 15,775. So far 211283 persons have recovered while 1033 have died of Covid19 in Assam.
