Disturbed Area Status extended in Manipur for one more year

Imphal, Dec 29, 2020: The Manipur Government has decided to extend the disturbed area status to all parts of the state, except the Imphal Municipal areas, for one more year with retrospective effect from December1, 2020 . The decision to extend the disturbed area status, under which the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA),1958 was taken at a Cabinet meeting.

State Home department notified in a statement said “The entire state of Manipur is in such a disturbed condition due to violent activities of various extremist/insurgent groups that the use of Armed Forces in aid of civil power is necessary. In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (Act No.28 of 1958) as amended from time to time, the Governor of Manipur hereby accords ex-post facto approval to declare the entire State of Manipur excluding the Imphal Municipal Area as ‘Disturbed Area’ for a period of one year with retrospective effect from December 1, 2020,”.
