Guwahati: Due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic, the Election Commission board on Tuesday announced that by-elections will not be conducted in Rangapara and Sivasagar assembly constituencies in Assam.
Both the seats have been left vacant after the death of Rajen Borthakur (BJP) and Pranab Gogoi (Congress) respectively.
Election Commission has decided not to announce the conduct of elections in the seven vacancies in legislative assemblies of the state of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Chief Secretaries of five poll-bound states even wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner, requesting the poll panel not to hold the by-elections citing the COVID-19 crisis.
The five states scheduled to go polls in 2021 are Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Regarding other, recent vacancies in the Parliamentary Constituency and Legislative Assembly, the Commission will decide after taking necessary inputs from the states concerned.
