Firing between BSF Jawans and Cattle Smugglers in Coochbehar, West Bengal

GUWAHATI: Border Security Force (BSF) personnel under the BSF Guwahati frontier engaged in a firing with cattle smugglers at Sitalkuchi in Coochbehar district of West-Bengal on Sunday.

Though no BSF personnel was injured in the firing, BSF said that a group of cattle smugglers started firing on a BSF patrol party when they were the border security personnel tried to stop them.

BSF sources said, “On Sunday, an Ambush cum Patrolling Party of Border out Post Putiabaramasia of 100 BN under Frontier Headquarter BSF Guwahati noticed suspicious movement of 20-25 miscreants from Bangladesh side and 18-20 miscreants on India side along with cattle heads moving towards Indo- Bangladesh border fence.”

“To disperse the miscreants the patrolling party threw one chilly grenade towards them. But the miscreants didn’t stop and fired some four to five rounds possibly from a .32 pistol from a distance of about 40 to 50 meters. In return, the ambush cum patrolling party fired one round of PAG towards the miscreants. Meanwhile, miscreants managed to escape by taking advantage of foggy weather,” the BSF spokesperson said.

While searching the area fence, BSF sleuths found breached near BP No- 904/7-S and recovered two live rounds, two empty cases of bullets from the spot. An FIR was lodged later.

This was the second incident of firing between cattle smugglers and BSF in the area since December last year.
