Flash floods and landslides in Mangkolemba sub-division of Mokokchung district, Nagaland

Mokokchung, August 10 : Incessant rain triggered flash floods and landslides in Mangkolemba sub-division of Mokokchung district, Nagaland on Wednesday morning. At least two persons were injured and several houses and properties were damaged.

According to sources, Mangkolemba has been cut off from the rest of the district due by landslides triggered by heavy rains that lashed the area at around 1:00 am on Wednesday, and a few houses are said to be on the verge of collapsing.

A labour camp (M/S ANK Construction) at Khar-Mongchen junction situated about 2 km from Mangkolemba, was swept away by a flash flood, injuring two persons after mud and slush carried the them about 50 meters below the camp. It was informed that heavy vehicles and construction machinery including two dumpers, two excavators, a dipper truck, and a car at the vicinity were inundated.

At Tzutayong Ward, one kutcha house was dislodged by sludge and boulders caused by a change of river course and a house partially damaged by a landslide at Hokiyonh Ward.

Further, a bridge connecting Kumpani Ward and Tzutayong Ward to Mangkolemba (Longtho-Mangkolemba road) has been rendered dangerous and risky for vehicles to ply due to erosion of the base foundation. A log bridge is under construction but sources said it may take a few days to complete it as well as clear the debris and boulders.

Road blockages were also reported between Khar and Mangkolemba as well as Jafu and Mangkolemba. The villagers were said to have taken the work of clearing the debris to facilitate traffic movement.

It is also reported that the rains have severely damaged paddy fields in Jafu village.
