Guwahati: Union minister for sports and youth welfare Kiren Rijiju on Saturday inaugurated a newly constructed training centre cum sports complex of Sports Authority of India (SAI) in Lakhimpur district of Assam.
The inauguration was done in presence of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Solal Gaon in state’s North Lakhimpur.
The sports complex includes a training centre , multipurpose indoor stadium, hostel for players and coaches apart from other sports-related facilities.
In the initial phase, the SAI Training Centre (STC) will be catering to athletes in the sports of weightlifting and boxing.
The chief minister released a guidebook on body building written in the Assamese language on the occasion. Sonowal also urged the younger generation to take up sports as a career and accordingly put dedicated efforts to be successful in the field of sports.

Union minister Kiren Rijiju, in his speech, said that sports are a lifestyle and an important part of a healthy life. He added that the new sports complex would help in emerging Lakhimpur as the epicentre of sports in the Upper Assam region.
