Dimapur, May 21,2022: Gauhati High Court Judge and Executive Chairman, Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, Justice Songkhupchung Serto on Saturday said law makers from the Northeast were not introducing new laws and therefore citizens had “very less laws” governing them.
He said that minor changes to the law were made only during emergencies or when situation arises. He was addressing law students of Kohima Law College, Kohima during an interaction programme in the college premise.
He said that 99% of the cases in the High Court were against the government and observed that the bureaucrats commit mistakes because of lack of knowledge on law.
“If every administrators, bureaucrats, legislators studies law for three years, they will become better at their profession,” he said and added that Law is dynamic, need continuous growth and is subject to change to feed the need of the society, an update stated.
The judge opined that law enables a person to differentiate between right and wrong, and one’s duties towards others and society.
He pondered how law graduates like Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru or BR Ambedkar etc made important contributions to the law of the country, and added that they were conscience keepers of the nation.
Therefore, he said, law was a subject everybody or anybody should study, it read. As for the students, he said Law as a career option was limitless and called to explore beyond getting stuck with senior advocates or becoming law graduates.
