Manipur Police accused Sub Inspector names another police officer involved in ‘custodial death’ of Jeweller Nanao

ImphaL 10 May 2022: Manipur Police accused Sub Inspector Jitendro who is currently under suspension following the “custodial death” of a jeweller Arambam Nanao has reportedly named another officer of the Manipur Police, who is also his batch-mate and another for their influenced in the arrest of the victim.

Police Sub-inspector Jitendro was produced before the court today with a prayer of further police custody while the counsel of the alleged accused filed a bail application.

The IO of the case submitted that during the course of interrogation, the prime accused has admitted to have committed the offence and revealed that on the request of his colleague Police SI K Tejkumar Singh of currently posted as Commando of Imphal East as well as on receipt of the complaint report lodged by one Kangabam Jackey Singh, he arrested the accused person in civil dress and brought him to the police station with the help of others.

Additional PP also submitted the same and stated that the accused is required to be interrogated thoroughly along with other witnesses who are associated or known in the incident or in the group. The PP further added that other civilian witnesses who are acquainted with the facts of the case are required to be examined thoroughly while the accused person is under police custody. Hence, the further police custody prayer is submitted for kind consideration in the interest of investigation of the case, the PPF said.

Following the submission, the court stated that a clear case of instigation of SI Tejkumar Singh attached with CDO, Imphal East could be made out as provided U/S 107 of IPC.

The IO of the case, however, submitted that SI K Tejkumar Singh is out of station for medical treatment because of which he could not be arrested till date.

After considering the submission, the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West remanded Police SI Jitendro into further police custody for seven days till May 16.

It may be mentioned that the sub-inspector of Manipur police Th Jitendro Singh was suspended on May 3 in connection with the death of a man in police custody, allegedly after brutal torture by the Imphal West district police.
