Teok Tea Estate murder: Death Sentence for One, Life Imprisonment to 24

GUWAHATI: A local court in Jorhat, has awarded Sanjay Rajowar, a prime accused in the Dr Deben Dutta lynching case, with a death sentence. The court has also sent 24 other convicts in the case to life imprisonment.

Last week, at least 25 accused were convicted of murder with rioting and other sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in the district and sessions court, Jorhat, for killing Dr Deben Dutta, a physician at the Teok Tea garden hospital, on August 31, 2019.

Police had arrested 32 tea garden workers for the lynching of Dutta and filed a charge sheet against them to the chief judicial magistrate of Jorhat on September 24 last year.

There were total 60 witnesses out of which 56 were examined.

He was attacked by a group of workers of Teok Tea estate after a tea garden worker allegedly died of medical negligence. He reportedly had severe cut wounds too. The attackers were allegedly furious that he was not in the estate hospital when a colleague died.

Dutta, a resident of Jogduar area in Jorhat district, succumbed to his injuries on August 31 last year. A graduate from the Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh, he had joined the Teok Tea Estate first in 1972 and worked there for 11 years.

Defence council said that they will challenge the lower court’s verdict in the High Court.
