Prime Minister Narendra Modi while delivering his vote of thanks in the Rajya Sabha on Monday (8 February) quoted former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s pro-farm reform views to state that he is implementing what Manmohan Singh once said.

“There are other rigidities because of the who marketing regime setup in the 1930s which prevent our farmers from selling their produce where they get the highest rate of return. It is our intention to remove all those handicaps which come in the way of India realising its vast potential as one large common market”, Prime Minister Modi quoted Manmohan Singh in the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister Modi added that he hopes those performing a U-Turn now will hopefully pay heed to Manmohan Singh’s comments advocating freedom for farmers to sell their produce and a common farming market.

“You should be proud to know that Modi is having to do what Manmohan Singh said”, he added.

In his speech Prime Minister Modi said that past government which included Congress and even Sharad Pawar have advocated for farm reforms.

He added that even those opposing the farm laws have implemented the same same to some extend in their own state governments. Prime Minister Modi also asserted that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) regime will continue to remain in force.

“MSP tha, MSP hai aur MSP rahega”, Prime Minister Modi said.
